Thaipusam Festival 2023
Thaipusam is a key Hindu’s Thanksgiving Festival which is celebrated in a grand fashion in countries where there are large numbers of Tamil populations like Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji and Mauritius.
This festival takes place once a year usually at end of January or early February based on Hindu calendar. This year the celebration falls on 5th February 2023.
This is a festival where Hindu devotees show their devotion and respect towards Lord Murugan, the God of the Tamil for fulfilling their vows and in return the devotees shall perform various act of thanksgiving such as shaving their hair, carrying milk pots and act of penance such as carrying a Kavadi, a metal structure that is hooked to one’s flesh or cheek piercing.
What to expect
In this tour, you will be able to learn how the devotees prepare their mind and soul prior to the peak of the celebration.
In addition, you will be able to visualize up close all key rituals related to this festival such as hair shaving, sacred bathing, milk carrying, preparing for trance, piercing of body part, bathing the Lord’s weapon and finally milk pouring on Lord Murugan in the temple cave.
During this period, roads close to this temple will be closed, therefore visitors would need to walk close to 2km from the meeting point to the festival starting point, the Batu river.
The tour will start at 7am and ends at noon.
