Melaka Walking Tour
Melaka was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7th July 2008 under the Cultural Heritage category. The Core Zone comprises of the St Paul’s Civic Zone and the Residential and Commercial Zone.
Meet and Greet at the Mural in Jalan Laksamana close to Church of St Francis Xavier
The tour starts at the Padang Nyiru parking lot which is close to the remnants of the Victoria Bastion. From there we shall walk along the river till we reached the Red Square and explore both Heritage Zone.
Areas Covered in St Paul Civic Zone
We shall be visiting the remnants of Portuguese fort and church, Straits of Melaka aerial view, reclamation area and the Dutch Square area.
Areas Covered in Residential and Commercial Zone
Stroll along the river and walk past the olden warehouses along the river route.
We would then explore the following streets :
Heeren St – which was known as the Millionaire Rows. Explore the various shop houses architecture from a typical Dutch shop house to an elaborate early and late eclectic design buildings. We shall visit the Baba Nyonya Museum and later long surviving business such as the Abdul Antiques and Wah Aik Shoemaker.
Jonker Street – which is the commercial zone. During the weekend it is transformed into a night market. Enjoy some titbits as we stroll along the street.
Harmony Street – this is the street where three main worshipping places are located within the same street. We also have the opportunity to explore some typical Malay design house around this area.
